Niagara Falls: A Great Getaway for Families, Couples and Adventurous Singles

Niagra Falls Getaway

Once known as the honeymoon capital of the world, today’s Niagara Falls is the center of a vast recreational area with spectacular natural beauty and more than enough outdoor and indoor activities to fill a week or overflow a weekend.

Niagara Falls is actually two cities with the same name, divided by the international border between the United States and Canada. The Canadian part is in the province of Ontario and the American part is in the state of New York. Three magnificent waterfalls thunder into the Niagara River that serves as a boundary between the countries.

Whether you’re traveling with your kids, planning a romantic vacation á deux or venturing out on your own or with a pal, you can choose from luxury accommodations and comprehensive Niagara Falls vacation packages that  include your hotel and local tours and attractions, to affordable short and long-term choices including charming bed and breakfast inns, campgrounds and RV parks on both sides of the border.

Niagara Falls has tons for singles, couples and families to do, and many activities are accessible via WEGO, the convenient hop-on, hop-off bus system that connects all of the Niagara Parks attractions.

Here’s a sample:

Experience the Falls 3 Ways

Great fun for everyone is a cruise on the Maid of the Mist from the American docks past the base of the American Falls and through the powerful current onward into the basin of the magnificent Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Operating since 1846, and the oldest tourist attraction in North America, the Maid of the Mist will open for the 2019season in May when the last of the ice melts on Lake Erie.Part of the fun involves getting a little wet in the process, but iconic yellow souvenir rain ponchos are included with the price of admission.

Back on land, you can see the falls from another perspective via the Niagara Parks Journey Behind the Falls(on the Canadian side) where an elevator takes you 150 feet down to a series of tunnels that lead you right to the brink of the astonishing wall of water crashing down from the top to the basin of the Horseshoe Falls. This attraction is open all year except on Christmas Day.

To see the falls from on high, daring adults can take an exhilarating zipline over the falls, and the whole family can take an aerial tour in a helicopter or ride in an enclosed gondola on the 175-foot Niagara SkyWheel.

Hike The TrailsHike the Trails

A well-kept secret are the Niagara Gorge trails, which traverse north from the falls for 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) and offer amazing views. Don’t miss the stairway that takes you down to Niagara Glen, where you’ll find prehistoric geological formations in a pocket of pristinely preserved Carolinian forest. If the kids are along, you might like to take a guided hiking tour through the glen. And if you’re up for a challenge, try the Niagara Glen Bouldering Trail.

Cycle Around

Take in the natural beauty of the region on one of its many cycling trails. There are more than 200 trails, catering to riders of every level. Niagara Parkway has been named one of the top 10 cycling routes in the world, stretching 36 miles (58 kilometers) along the Canadian side of the Niagara River. For a serious ride, take all or part of the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail that stretches 485 miles (780 kilometers), following the shores of Lake Ontario from Niagara-on-the-Lake to the Quebec border.

Take to The Water

If you’re ready for some thrills, you can take a kayak trip on a fast-moving current. If you want to take it a little slower, you can take an afternoon outing on the Niagara River via canoe or river raft. And there’s more than one huge indoor water-park with slides and a wave pool that the whole family will enjoy.

Taste the Local Wine

The Niagara Region is known for its award-winning wines including the unique ice wine, made from grapes harvested when temperatures are below freezing and sugar content is highest. The Niagara Wine Route on the Canadian side, and the Niagara Wine Trail on the American side feature dozens of wineries with tasting rooms set amid acres of gorgeous vineyards.

Enjoy the Night Life

The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. There are fine-dining and family friendly restaurants, and two casinos offering gaming along with comedy shows and live entertainment with headline stars as well as a magic show that will enthrall everyone.
